F9 is a financial reporting software application that dynamically links ledgers data to Microsoft Excel through the use of formulas, wizards, and financial-based analysis tools to create countable, filtered, and drilled spreadsheet reports. The F9 software is developed, marketed and supported by an organization also called F9, a division of Infor Global Solutions (Canada) Ltd. headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Histori
F9 - Financial Reporter was originally developed by Synex Systems Corporation, a subsidiary of Synex International (Symbol SXI, TSX) and was first released in 1988 for Accpac as Lotus 1-2-3 Add-in for DOS and then F9 developed for Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet Platform. In 2002, Synex Systems was acquired by privately owned Lasata Software in Perth, Australia. In 2005, Lasata was acquired by United Systems based in the UK. In 2007, Systems Union was acquired by Infor Global Solutions, a US company that specializes in enterprise software.
What is Synex Systems Corporation now operates as an independent business unit (IBU) in Infor Global Solutions called F9 and continues to develop and partner with new and existing Accounting and ERP Software solutions.

Overview
F9 was developed to enable non-technical users, usually an accountant, to create dynamic, customized general ledger financial reports using a hot-linked spreadsheet into the general ledger of the accounting system. By deleting the steps previously needed to export data from the accounting application and then importing the data into a spreadsheet or retyping all numbers using data entry, much time and effort are saved. Also, if the data in the accounting system change the spreadsheet it can be updated simply by pressing the function key 'F9' (in 1-2-3 and Excel).
The F9 software consists of three modules. The first is the user interface which is an addin that is installed into the spreadsheet. This section processes the formula F9 and passes the data to the parser. The second module is a parser which is a program that runs independent of the spreadsheet and evaluates the requested data (query) by the function and rejects it as invalid and returns an error message or processes the query into the format used by the accounting application interface (AAI). AAI is a DLL that is programmed as a special interface for target accounting applications.
This three-layer design (essentially a variation of the standard Model-view-controller architecture) allows F9 to support different spreadsheets with the same non-addin component and access a number of different accounting applications simultaneously. All that is required is that DLLs built for the target accounting application are available for parser programs to access and queries that specify the requested accounting system. These accounting system definition parameters are optional. If there is only one accounting interface available, F9 knows this through searching tables and scanning available DLL modules.
Since its introduction, F9 has been regarded as one of the industry standard accounting reporting tools.
Significance
F9 has become a well-known tool for reporting adhoc accounting available for many small and medium enterprise accounting systems in the world and provides OLAP integration capabilities and Basic information through the Excel interface and adds an unusual natural language request capacity available when added to F9 in 1990.
In 2012 F9 has been used by over 30,000 financial accounting professionals in over 20 countries worldwide and is named as one of the "Top 100 Software Product" Accounting Today for 2001.

Original version
Originally titled: 'F9 - The Financial Reporter,' F9 was released in mid 1989 as Lotus 1-2-3 for DOS addins that allows dynamic access to General Ledger Accpac software data. The first interface uses the same syntax as Accpac to specify the reporting period. This is immediately replaced by a more easily understood and more flexible generic natural language interface that uses temporary syntax of three parsing syntax phrases composed of modifiers, period determers, and temporal indexes. For example: "start of last quarter balance" is broken down into 'quarter' last (temporal) 'quarter' (period). The temporal index can be relative or absolute and the modifier can determine whether the returned value is differential or cumulative.
The first F9 Addin is a significant software effort as it uses encoding tricks to break the limit of small memory models 1-2-3 charged on the addins and allows F9 to run as a compact memory model program. This allows F9 to be written in C (using a compiler from Microsoft C DOS) rather than an assembler that allows easier change and debugging.
In or about 2002 F9 was named 'F9 - Financial Intelligence.'
Excel Dominate 1-2-3
Addin F9 was developed for Excel in 1989 and with a lack of 1-2-3 versions that support Windows and problems with Lotus Programming Language (LPL) version of Excel F9 soon goes beyond the 1-2-3 version.
Current version
There are two main types of F9 products, Hotlink products that link directly to specific accounting databases and Professionals that link to the intermediate database inhabited from the source of the ERP system in various ways.
F9 has an Excel add-in client and provides new Excel functions as well as some UI-driven functions alone. There is an F9 version that is compatible with Excel Version 2007 through 2016.

In 1994 more and more vendors of accounting systems signed to have the F9 version built to work with their ledger products. In the late 1990s more and more large companies recognized the benefits of F9 and started using the product.
Over 150 different accounting/ERP systems are supported. Products are available as a direct link to the source accounting database, marketed as "hotlink", or through F9 Professional and F9 mart databases regularly refreshed with source count activities. The F9 "hotlink" product is available for more than 40 different accounting systems. F9 Professional is available for more than 100 different accounting systems and can be integrated into new accounting applications.
