In April 2014, a Canadian-based chain, Boston Pizza, incorporated a pizza cake as part of its Pizza Game Changers promotion, featuring many products related to "weird" pizza. The recipe quickly became the most popular promotion, receiving 15,000 votes before 21 April - more than five times that of its closest competitor, mint pizza. It holds this position until promotion is closed. The company advertises the potion as "good for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, weddings, and even lonely nights watching infomercials".
Inspired by the Boston Pizza promotion, then in April, the pizza cake recipe is posted to the So Good Blog; one Reddit user who tries recipes describes it as "heavenly", albeit with a strong "hangover". In September 2014, a pizza cake recipe by Shawn Syphus was posted by Pillsbury Company. It soon circulated widely on the internet, becoming viral; the company is sometimes mistakenly associated with that derived from the recipe.

Good Blog Recipes call for regular pizza dough, rolled into a thick <5> thick (5 mm) layer of / 5 , of which six 6 round pieces 1/3 inch (16 cm) in diameter cut. This round is cooked in a heated oven for 15 minutes, then left to cool. Meanwhile, baking powder is sprinkled into pots, the sides then coated with a thickness of 1 / 5 -inch (5 mm) layer of dough. When this is completed and the rounds cooled, the rounds are placed at the bottom, then covered with pizza ingredients (including sauce, pepperoni, and cheese); this step is repeated until the pot is filled. After the excess dough is trimmed and the tip is inserted, the pizza cake is roasted for 45 minutes.
The Pillsbury recipe that became viral in September 2014 has the same recipe, though smaller, that calls for less cooking time. This recipe recommends a saucepan with a high side (square or round), and asks for three layers of dough and a total of 28-33 minutes cooking time (8 for rounds and 20-25 for ready made pizza).
The Daily Mirror delivers a total of 5,000 calories for a Pizza Pizza six-layer pizza cake. The Daily Mail , reviewing Pillsbury recipes, estimates that each pizza cake has 3,818 calories, or 636 per slice of layered cake.
Reception
Peter Sagal of NPR found the recipe was more complicated than it appeared, writing "It's not exactly (how much do you like pizza) x (number of layers)", and that the pizza cake lost the crispness of the crust. He concludes that the recipe is fun to make, and the "cheesy amount of cheese" eaten makes people forget the crust. Rosanne Salvatore, writing for the online magazine Bustle , thinks the cake is worth a try even though there is a lot of work and expense required; he concluded "I made a miracle [pizza cake] with my bare hands".
April Blake, writing at the Cleveland Free Times, has a more negative view of the recipe. He found it difficult to prepare, less crisp in the crust, and more unhealthy than regular pizza.
