The Best American Series is a collection of books published each year, published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, each featuring a different genre or theme. Each book chooses from a work published in North America during the preceding year, selected by a guest editor who is a writer founded in a particular field. This original series should not be confused with the latest American series published by Harper Perennial and Palgrave Macmillan.

Method
Each category has an ongoing series editor, which makes the initial choice of famous works. The guest editor for that year then selects fewer snippets from the initial list. Pieces that do not make the final piece are often given a respectable mention in the alphabetical list at the back of the book.
A work is eligible for the series if it is published in English (or published in another language, but translated into English by the author) in the United States, Canada, Mexico, or Greenland; if first appeared, or significantly revised, during the previous year; and if the author originated or lived in North America. Internet publications are eligible if their audience includes North American readers.
Many editions are a mixture of more established writers (eg, Joyce Carol Oates, Michael Chabon, Lorrie Moore) with rising authors who have achieved moderate success (eg, Benjamin Percy, Kyle Minor, Ander Monson). Introduction to each book is written by the series editor, guest editor, and/or other celebrities (eg, Viggo Mortensen actor for Nonrequired Reading , and English cooking Jamie Oliver for Recipes ).
The volume title is the year the volume is published. Articles in volume were published the previous year. So for example The Best American Essays 2000 contains articles published in 1999. Volumes are published in September or October each year.
