Colin Rand Kaepernick ( KAP -? r-nik , born November 3 , 1987) is a quarterback of American football who is currently a free agent. Kaepernick plays college football for the University of Nevada in Reno, where he was named the Player of the Year's Best Athletic Conference (WAC) of the Year's Player of the Year twice and became the only player in the history of the FBS Division I NCAA to collect 10,000 yards passing and 4,000 yards rushed in a career. After graduation, he was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of NFL Draft 2011.
Kaepernick started his professional football career as a backup midfielder for Alex Smith, and became a 49ers starter in mid-2012 after Smith suffered a concussion. He then remained the team's early quarterback for the rest of the season, leading the team to their first Super Bowl appearance since 1994. During the 2013 season, his first full season as a starter, Kaepernick helped the 49ers reach the NFC Game Championship. Over the next three seasons, Kaepernick lost and won back his initial job, with 49ers absent in the playoffs for three consecutive years. He opted out of his contract with the 49ers to become a free agent after the 2016 season.
In 2016, Kaepernick became a national figure when he triggered a storm of controversy by refusing to stand while the US anthem was being played before the start of the NFL match. He described his behavior as a protest against racial injustice in the United States. His actions encourage a negative and positive response. Negative responses include suggestions that protest players should be fired; others expressed their disagreement over the players' protests by leaving the stadium immediately after the protests or refusing to watch the game altogether. Kaepernick is a mixed race. He was born in 1987 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Heidi Russo, a 19 year old white woman who was single at the time. His biological father, an African American man, left Russo before Colin was born. Russo put Colin in for adoption with Rick and Teresa Kaepernick, a white couple who had two sons - Kyle and his daughter Devon - and were looking for a boy after losing two other boys to a heart defect. Kaepernick became the youngest of their three children. He lived in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, until the age of four, and attended elementary school in Turlock, California.
When Kaepernick was eight years old, he started playing youth football as a defensive and defensive edge. At the age of nine, he was an early quarterback on his youth team, and he completed his first pass for a long touchdown. A GPA 4.0 student at John H. Pitman High School in Turlock, California, Kaepernick plays soccer, basketball and baseball and is nominated for All-State selection in all three of his senior year sports. He is the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Central California Conference in football, leading his school to his first playoff victory. In basketball, he is the first team of all CCC selection up front and leads the 16th-ranked team to the squad which is close to the # 1 ranking at Oak Ridge High School in the opening round of the playoffs. Kaepernick received most of his high school praise as a baseball pitcher. He received several scholarship offers in the sport, but he really wanted to play college football. Kaepernick started his college career in Nevada playing in 11 of 13 team games. He finished the season with 19 touchdown passes, three interception, and 2,175 passing yards with a completion percentage of 53.8%. Kaepernick also added a rushing 593 yards and six rushing touchdowns as the Nevada Wolf Pack finished 6-7.
2008
As a second-year student, Kaepernick became the fifth player in NCAA history to qualify 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 or more yards in one season. Some of the prominent statistical achievements are:

Kaepernick, with 1,130 meters rushing, and ran back Vai Taua, with 1,521 yards, made 2008 the first year in school history that Nevada had two 1,000 yards rushing in the same season.
Despite playing in the second half with an ankle injury, he set a new Humanitarian Bowl record at 370 yards and was awarded the MVP in a losing bid. He was named Offensive Wac of the Year at the end of the season. He was the first year student to win this award since Marshall Faulk of San Diego State in 1992. Kaepernick was named the WAC pre-season offensive player of the year at the WAC Media event in July. On 3 August was announced he was appointed to the pre-season Davey O'Brien Award. On August 14 it was announced that he was named to the Maxwell Award pre-season list and on August 17th to the Manning Award watch list. Kaepernick led the Wolf Pack to an 8-5 record and finished second in the WAC behind an unbeaten Boise State. He was named second-team All-WAC quarterback. He was the first player in Nevada's history to get the team's MVP award twice, doing it in 2008 as well.
He finished the 2009 season with 2,052 passing yards and 1,183 meters rushing. He became the first player in NCAA history to record a back-to-back 2,000/1,000 yard season. 1,183 meters in a hurry along with 1,034 Luke Lippincott and 1,345 Vai Taua made it part of the first trio of teammates in the history of the NCAA to rush 1,000 yards each in the same season.

Entering the 2010 NCAA season, Kaepernick is ranked first among college football players active in hasty touchdowns. He's second on meter-per-carry (behind Wolf Pack Vai Taua's team-mates), total offense-per-game, and goals scored. He ranks third in the meter-per-play and fourth in the touchdown pass and the total amount of offensive play. He was an advisor at the prestigious Manning Passing Academy event in Thibodaux, Louisiana, during the 2010 camp. His performance drew praise from various NFL and ESPN personnel including former New York Giants quarterback Jesse Palmer who said about Kaepernick, "by far, the strongest arm in the camp ".
It was also announced that Kaepernick, along with his teammates Taua and Lippincott, will be on display at the High Level Football Hall of Fame to commemorate them as the first player in NCAA history for every 1,000 yards rushing on the same team during the same season. Kaepernick was named for a list of shows for six major college football awards: Manning Award, Davey O'Brien Award, Paul Hornung Award, Maxwell Award, Unitas Award, and Walter Camp Award.
On November 26, Kaepernick led his team to a 34-31 overtime victory against an undefeated Boise State Broncos, snapping a 24-match winning streak that was dated back to Poinsettia Bowl 2008. The game was played on the senior night of Nevada, the last home game for Kaepernick. Nevada Chief Coach Chris Ault will then refer to this game as "the most important victory in program history". During this match, Kaepernick surpassed 1,000 yards rushing for the season, becoming the first player in NCAA history to have more than 2,000 yards and 1,000 yards rushing for three successive seasons. On December 4 against Louisiana Tech University, Kaepernick joined Tim Tebow in Florida as the second midfielder in FBS history to be thrown for 20 goals and ran for 20 in the same season. Later that same night, Auburn's Cam Newton joined Tebow and Kaepernick as the third. Kaepernick is the only quarterback in college football history. Division I FBS has graduated over 10,000 yards and is rushing for more than 4,000 yards in a college career. He is also the only FBS quarterback division I have passed over 2,000 yards and rushed for over 1,000 yards in a season three times in a career (consecutive).

For 2011 preseason, Kaepernick completed 24-of-50 tickets for 257 yards and five interception. Kaepernick spent the 2011 season in reserve for Alex Smith and played his first game on Sunday 4 (October 2) on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles. With Smith still in recovery, Kaepernick got his first NFL start of the next game on 19 November, during Monday Night Football match against Chicago Bears at Candlestick Park. Kaepernick completed 16-of-23 for 246 yards with two goals in a 32-7 win against a highly rated Bears defense. Head coach 49, Jim Harbaugh praised Kaepernick's performance after the game, leaving the possibility that Kaepernick will start. "Usually tend to go with men who have hot hands, and we have two quarterbacks that get hot hands", Harbaugh said. The quarterback controversy begins. Smith was ranked third in the NFL in passer rating (104.1), leading the league in settlement percentage (70%), and had 19-5-1 as a starter under Harbaugh, while Kaepernick was considered more dynamic with his ability to fight and arm strength.
Smith was cleared to play the day before the next game, but Harbaugh chose not to rush back and re-start Kaepernick. 2013 season
In the opening season of the 2013 season against the Green Bay Packers, Kaepernick earned a career of as high as 412 yards and three goals, the first 400 yards of the game by 49ers players since Tim Rattay on October 10, 2004. Of a total of 412 yards, 208 yards for newly acquired teammate Anquan Boldin , making his debut as a 49er. Kaepernick entered the 2016 season to start the quarterback position with Gabbert. On September 3, 2016, Chip Kelly's 49ers coach Gabbert named as a starter for the start of the 2016 season. Prior to the 49ers Week 6 game against Buffalo Bills, Kelly announced Kaepernick would start, marking his first start of the season. On October 13, it was announced that he and 49er restructured his contract, turning him into a two-year deal with player options for the following season. In the third preseason game of the 2016 season, Kaepernick was seen sitting during the screening of "The Star-Spangled Banner" as opposed to standing tradition. In September 2016, sociology professor Michael Eric Dyson writes about the double bond faced by blacks: "Black people, throughout history, show their patriotism by criticizing the nation for its shortcomings, and they, in turn, are heavily criticized. " Dyson suggests that the wisdom of the abolitionist Frederick Douglass retains its relevance to racism in the context of Kaepernick and protests. Dyson concluded, "When a black athlete boldly speaks, we punish him."
In August 2017, former NYPD official Frank Serpico gave a live speech on Facebook and stood with police officers at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge to support Kaepernick. That same month, Pro Football Hall of Fame and longtime civil rights activist Jim Brown told an interviewer that while he "wanted to be in the corner [Kaepernick]", he would never "stain my flag and my national anthem."
In September 2017, President Donald Trump sent a few tweets, in which he advocated that NFL players should be fired or suspended if they failed to defend the national anthem. Controversy over free agency
After his departure from the 49ers, Kaepernick became unsigned through offseason and training camps in 2017, leading to allegations that he was being driven for his political actions on the field as opposed to his performances, an idea backed by Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman. Other players, including New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and former teammate Alex Smith, have declared that they believe their competitive sporting ability in the NFL, and they are unsure of prolonged unemployment, while former quarterback Michael Vick argues that he not signed because of its declining performance. Outside the NFL, President Donald Trump claimed that Kaepernick's situation was caused by a fear that he would use Twitter to create a public relations crisis for every team that signed it, while Kyle Wagner of FiveThirtyEight found that Kaepernick was not signed for his political opinion.. In late July and early August 2017, Baltimore Ravens reportedly worked to extend the offer to Kaepernick. According to former African American Ravens player Ray Lewis, the offer was ended after Kaepernick's girlfriend Nessa Diab - who works as a radio host - posted an incendiary tweet that compared Ravens team owner Steve Bisciotti with slave owner and player Ray Lewis to slaves.
