Dell XPS (Xtreme Performance System) is a line of gaming and performance computers manufactured by Dell.

History

The XPS (Xtreme Performance System) name dates back to 1990 when Dell focused more on the company's business than the consumer. Gateway is number one in the high-end consumer market. In early 1993, there was a staff meeting to discuss how to pursue this emerging market. At this time, Dell's annual revenue is less than $ 500 million and Michael Dell is involved in most decisions. At this meeting, it was decided to launch a new high-end product line to compete with Gateway. Vernon Weiss is assigned as product manager to spearhead and manage new products. In September 1993, the first two versions of the XPS line were announced. The first generation of XPS systems is available either as a desktop or case tower. This new product line is very far ahead of the competition featured on the cover of the October 1993 edition of PC/Computing.

Over the next three years, with Vernon Weiss managing the product line, the XPS system won over 100 reviews and magazine covers, becoming the first to adopt the latest PC technology available and bringing it to consumers at an attractive price. XPS mainly competes with computers such as Acer Aspire, HP's Pavilion and Envy, Lenovo IdeaPad and Toshiba's Satellite.

From 1997 to 2001, when Dell grew into a large company, the XPS line lost its position as a leading performance engine and basically just a line for fast computers. In 2005, Dell changed the XPS line to compete with Alienware (now owned by Dell) and Falcon Northwest.

In 2005, Dell separated its home desktop system into two channels: Dell Dimension and XPS. Consumer notebooks are also separated into two lines: Inspiron and XPS. While the designation of XPS used means that the hardware is high-end and suitable for gaming, it's no longer the case. For example, XPS 200 is limited to low-end video cards, while the XPS M140 can only be configured with Intel video, thus making both systems unsuitable for gaming or high-end use.

Dell has considered buying Alienware since 2002, but did not take any action until March 22, 2006, when it agreed to buy the company. Alienware retains its autonomy in terms of design and marketing. However, Alienware access to Dell's supply chain management, purchasing power, and economies of scale lowered operating costs. The XPS line initially has the same specifications as those offered by the Alienware division. In 2008, Dell introduced "Studio XPS" and Dell advertised it as a performance computer line while Alienware was being advertised for game play. On June 2, 2009, M17x was introduced as the first Alienware/Dell branded system.

Dell XPS Towers was released in July 2016. Three systems were introduced: XPS Tower, XPS Tower VR, and XPS Tower Special Edition. All systems are introduced with 6th generation CPU (Skylake) i5 and i7, at least 8 GB of DDR4 memory, and are designed with an easy-to-open chassis for simplified development. One of the major differences from 8900 is that now the m.2 connector supports 4 PCE-E lines instead of 1. VR and Special Edition meet and exceed the recommended minimum specifications for virtual reality run and Special Edition pass the testing for the Oculus Ready and HTC Vive Certification Program Optimized.

XPS 8900

Dell XPS 8900 is released in October 2015. It is designed for moderate to heavy gaming performance and high-end workstation performance. It features Intel 6th-generation (Skylake) i5 and i7 CPUs on the LGA 1151 socket. It also includes an upgrade to higher bandwidth DDR4 memory.

XPS 8700

Dell XPS 8700 is the second most recent Dell product in the XPS line. It's designed for high-end gaming and high-end workstation workstations. It features a Dell 0KWVT8 motherboard with LGA-1150 socket. It comes with an Intel Core i7 quad-core processor and Nvidia Geforce GTX 660. Special edition is available with AMD Radeon R9 270.

XPS 8500

Released on May 2, 2012, the Dell XPS 8500 is the first version in this series that has an Intel Quad Core i5 and i7 third generation processor added to it. This XPS motherboard version uses Intel Chipset H77 with LGA 1155 socket and has USB 3.0 port on the front. The "Special Edition" version of this desktop, (starting at $ 999 per Jan '13), comes standard with advanced features like Intel Core i7, Blu-ray drive and Intel 32GB SRT SSD mounted on the motherboard to improve operational speed traditional hard disk.

XPS 8100

Released in 2010, the Dell Studio XPS 8100 is a mid-sized versatile PC aimed at home users. It has a Core i5-650 processor, 4 GB DDR3 RAM, 1 TB hard drive space and NVIDIA GTS 240 graphics card as standard.

XPS One 27"

Dell XPS One 27 "is an all-in-one PC that, therefore, has a 27-inch screen with a resolution of 2560 pixels wide and 1440 pixels high.It is the recipient of CNET's 2012 Editor's Choice Award, and it is also given as a PC all- in-one best PCMag of 2012.

CNET editor Rich Brown, who wrote a review that rewards XPS One 27's "Editor's Choice Award, notes that it" boasts the highest screen resolution among Windows 8 all-in-one, and at an aggressive price. "

Studio XPS

The Studio XPS, also referred to as Studio XPS 435MT, was released November 16, 2008. It is a PC with somewhat performance between the XPS 420 and 630. The processor is the Intel Core i7. The current Studio XPS model, however, is not gamer oriented, with only one PCIe x16 slot and 475 watt power supply. It has RAID0/1 support, however, as well as capability of up to 24 GB of RAM. Other basic options include Nvidia GeForce 7300LE, 7200RPM SATA-300 hard drive, and dual-channel DDR2 RAM. The casing is almost identical to the E510 Dimension, with an additional 3.5 inch drive bay added. This case is physically higher because of this. The power supply is also slightly more powerful than the Dimension E510 (375 W vs 305 W, respectively). XPS 410 replaces the XPS 400. Replaced by XPS 420. The XPS 410 unit is also sold as Dimension 9200, allowing Dell to continue to sell the remaining units after the XPS 410 discontinued.

In a weird twist, Dimension 9200 is the last desktop in the Dimension line, effectively creating the last XPS unit in the Dimension family.

XPS 420

Now discontinued, features the same components as the XPS 410, but uses different case designs and new features. This is a Dell media-based computer featuring Dell Xcelerator (a simple and effective Video Recorder), and an LCD screen in this case, running Windows Vista SideShow. XPS 435T, XPS 435MT

 This is the LGA1366 X58 chipset computer in the ATX layout. XPS435T is a Mid Tower and is supported by 6 core i7 CPU and 3 channel DDR3 memory. It's a heatpipe cooler on a chipset.  XPS435MT is a smaller version of Mini Tower. It initially has support for 4 core Nehalem i7 CPUs but 4 and 6 core Haswell support added with A15 BIOS. That's a passive cooler on the chipset. It has 3 channels of DDR3 memory as well. Many Nehalem, and Haswell Xeon CPUs can be installed here as well.  Because the memory controller that is on the CPU memory speed will vary with the CPU selected, and also with the number of RAM modules installed.  

XPS 600 series

Former flagship model of the XPS series is equipped with dual-core Intel Pentium D 950 processor, dual Nvidia GeForce 7900GTX in IDD mode, SATA 7200 RPM hard drive, and dual-channel DDR2 RAM. The case has not changed significantly over the last few generations, with large aluminum plates on the front. Discontinued a few days after XPS 700 launch and succeeded by XPS 700.

XPS 630

Description

It is no longer available from Dell as a new system purchase, but it's in a factory outlet. This desktop at one time fills the gap between XPS 420/430 media-oriented and XPS 730x high-end. There is no physical difference between 630 and 630i. The marketing concept is to use "i" to designate systems installed with Intel chipsets, and "a" for systems with AMD-installed chipsets, but because Intel-based chipsets are the only model ever sold, this designation has little significance.. 630 is equipped with a Dell-modified Nvidia nForce 650i chipset that supports both SLI and CrossFire configurations, but does not have ESA certification (the only ESA-certified component in the 630i is the "Master Input/Output" (or "MIO") printed circuit board from Dell). The XPS 630 at one time comes standard with Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU and Nvidia GeForce 8800GT dual graphics card.

Problems and solutions

There are some problems with the XPS 630 including problems with chassis fan control, chassis LED lights, and non-shipping lightshow 2.0 LightFX control software. unlimited PCIe slot configurations (8,8,1,1 unlike OEM Nvidia 650i SLI motherboards that also offer configuration 16.1,1,1), constant HDD LED activity, and reliability issues due to problems attached to the Nvidia 650i SLI Chipset can appear when overclocking with 4 or more gigabytes of RAM. The problems resulted in PC PRO canceling their Recommendation award for the system.

July 22, 2009 release Softex Media Plug-in has provided some of the features initially advertised on LightFX. The BIOS update is issued to patch the constant HDD LED activity. Some owners of the 630i have gone through the previously mentioned problem by swapping the Dell modified 650i motherboard with OEM motherboards like EVGA nForce 780i SLI FTW. The motherboard has 8 cable lines for each PCIe slot, which can limit performance when using a high-performance graphics card. Performance is equivalent to other systems with a 650i chipset motherboard when using two graphics cards in IDD mode.

XPS 700 series

XPS 700

Targeted at the gaming community, this model features Intel Pentium D Extreme processors up to 3.7 GHz with dual nVidia GeForce 7900 GTX in SLI mode, SATA 7200RPM hard drive, and dual-channel DDR2 RAM. This desktop is advertised as an overclock but it is not. Dell will then offer a free XPS 720 motherboard upgrade program to all XPS 700 and 710 owners so this machine can be overclocked with bios. The aluminum casing features a distinctive "tilt" design. XPS 700 uses significantly larger power supply (750 watts and 1 kilo-watt) than other XPS models to accommodate high-end video cards and overclocked CPUs. Unlike its vanguard, it uses non-standard BTX motherboards, thus limiting upgradability. Superseded by XPS 710 and many customers are offered free upgrade of motherboards to the XPS 720 specification following complaints about the system.

XPS 710

The flagship model of the official XPS series featuring Intel Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors, and Core 2 Quad processors. Other features include dual nVidia GeForce 7950 GX2 in Quad SLI mode, 7200RPM SATA hard drive, dual-channel DDR2 RAM. XPS 710 uses a much larger power supply than other XPS models to accommodate high-end video cards and overclocked CPUs. Superseded by XPS 720.

XPS 720 H2C

H2C edition computers have included dual stage radiator cooling technology, and motherboards capable of overclocking the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800 quad core. The H2C comes standard with an Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX card running on SLI for $ 6,780. XPS 720 H2C uses a slightly higher quality section than other XPS classes and is currently one of the most powerful and one of the fastest pre-wake systems that can be purchased by someone with significant margins. However, the overall performance hamper is the location of 16x PCIe slots. In an ideal SLI configuration, the 16x slot should be closer to the second 16x at the end of the board. This is not currently available in the UK.

XPS 720

Announced on November 24, 2007, XPS 720 is equal to XPS 720 H2C, except it does not have "dual-stage radiator cooling technology." It comes in two versions, the Red Special Edition, which is the same as the normal Black, both come with a 1 kW power supply.

XPS 730 H2C

The 730 H2C has a H2C (high performance cooling system) as standard, ideal for gaming and overclocking. The motherboard, Nvidia nForce 790i Ultra, is capable of overclocking the quad-core Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770 to 3.64Ã, GHz. DDR3 SDRAM dual channel system memory is available in the United States and United Kingdom. There are also color choices in some outlets. The basic PC model specifications are: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 (3.46 GHz Overclocked), GIGI 1 GB ATI Radeon 3870 X2 Crossfire X Graphics Card, 2 GB Memory, 1 TB 7200rpm Dual HDD. The base price in the UK is Ã,  £ 2,499. The system also features an enhanced H2C cooling device, seen on ultra high-end gaming computers. It has been replaced by XPS 730x (see above).

XPS 730X H2C

Released on 16 November 2008, basically is XPS 730 with Intel Core i7 which also uses new Intel X58 chipset motherboard. 730X, when configured with Core i7 975 Extreme Edition, can overclock the factory to 3.73 GHz with H2Ceramic cooling option. 730X also integrates AlienFX Alienware and new theater lighting system. The internal of the 730X has also been fixed for ease of upgrade, although most of the inside remains the same. 730X supports Tri-Channel 6 GB DDR3. Support graphics card is NVIDIA Geforce GTX 285 double or single, or ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 single. The 730X operating system also supports 64-bit Windows. Dell internally discontinued XPS 730X at its US online store on or about August 1, 2009 and canceled the remaining orders after August 15, 2009. It has been mentioned that this is done to focus more attention on customers looking for a gaming computer, such as Alienware. Laptop

Dell re-developed their XPS performance line. The three new laptops, released in October 2010, have many new features and specifications of the old model. They have JBL speakers with Waves MaxxAudio 3 technology, and have integrated 3D graphics. This channel is the first time Skype certified for video chat. They have Intel i5 and i7 processors. The X-Fi upgrade offered by Dell is not a hardware upgrade but a software-based processing package that "delivers premium audio quality, effects, and features".

XPS 11

XPS 11 (9P33)

Dell announced the XPS 11 in June 2013. It has a 11.6 inch screen that can be folded back nearly 360 degrees to act as a tablet. It ships with Windows 8.1 and Intel Core i5 processor "Haswell".

XPS 12

XPS 12 (9Q23)

XPS 12 is a convertible laptop. The convertible reflects the general aesthetic of the Dell XPS 13 ultrabook and other models in the XPS lineup, although hybrids swap the aluminum look of its predecessor with carbon fiber exteriors. The cover and the exterior edges are framed by the aluminum edges of the engine, while the interior consists of the remaining magnesium-alloy palm coated with matte black paint. The Dell XPS 12 body is made with a fingerprint-resistant coating. It has a hinged LCD screen. Applying a push to the top of the screen frees up the 12.5-inch, 1,920x1,080, 400-nit brightness screen from the magnetic lock that holds it in place, i5-3317U Intel i5-3317U convertible processor 1.7 Intel HD Graphics 4000 integrated graphics, which combines with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB solid-state drive and Core i5 processor, but boosts the memory to 8 GB and up to 256 GB of storage. XPS 12 (9Q33)

In July 2013, Dell released the XPS 12 with Intel Haswell processor (4th Generation). This improvement comes as a boost in Ultrabook performance as well as battery life. Dell also added near field communication on this device.

XPS 12 (9250)

In 2015, Dell released the new XPS 12 with Intel Skylake Core M. Processor The hinge system has been removed and replaced with a fully removable display. The device has a 4K Ultra HD display (3860 x 2160p), a kickstand and an 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera. The new XPS 12 has an all-metal build of the new XPS 13.

Released in October 2016, 9360 is similar to the 9350 but with the new Intel Kaby Lake processor (7th generation I series) or, in some models from late 2017 onwards, the 8th generation Intel Kaby Lake R processor. The XPS 13 Developer Edition is already loaded with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

XPS 13 2-in-1 (9365 , Beginning 2017)

XPS 13 (9370, Start 2018)

Released in January 2018, the 9370 features an entirely new design refresh, with a smaller footprint and lighter chassis. Battery capacity dropped from 60 watts-hours to 52 watts-hours, most likely due to a smaller form factor. XPS 15 (9550)

On October 8, 2015, Dell updated the XPS 15 (9550) with Skylake micro architecture. XPS 15 (9570, May 2018)

XPS 15 (9570) is the latest version of the XPS 15 model (9560). The new model brings options for the new Core i5, Core i7 and Core i9, with options for the latter, the Core i9-8950HK six-core, which clocks at 2.9GHz, by increasing the 4.8GHz clock and the ability to be overclocked as well. The new model also comes with an option for the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti graphics card, and has an optional fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button. XPS 15z

XPS 15z (L511Z)

XPS 15z was released in May 2011 and is a 15.6-inch laptop. It was branded as the thinnest 15-inch PC on the market. Criticism

The M1730 has been criticized for its looks, increased weight and size compared to previous models, and has only slightly improved performance in selected games. The last complaint is likely because Nvidia has just released a mobile version of the 8800M video card that Dell added to the list of options after the M1730 release.

Upgrade

After the initial release of M1730, the option to have a dual GTX 8800M graphics card on SLI is available. This is said to have a power boost of 174% (as cited by Dell) over dual 8700M GT on SLI which was previously the highest available option. Recently the option to have a dual graphics card 9800M GT and 9800M GTX on SLI has been added to the channel.

The 9800M GTX SLI is currently supported by the highest graphics card with 1 GB of GDDR3 VRAM for the M1730, compared to 9800M GT SLI and 8800M GTX SLI with only 512Ã, MB Memory Video available and a slightly higher number of stream processors. Thus, it performs slightly better than GTX 9800M and 8800M GTX cards. The availability of 9800M GTX SLI is rare, and can only be purchased from Dell's limited stores and on eBay. And in many cases, they run out of stock, no longer sold or sell GTX 9800M and 8800M GTX graphics cards before.

XPS M1530

This 15.4-inch laptop, released on November 28, 2007, features the Santa Rosa platform. The XPS M1530 is almost identical in design to the XPS M1330 except that it has 4 different colors (blue, black, pink and red) and it's a bit thicker and heavier with a CCFL or 15.4 inch LED screen. It can be configured with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor up to T7800 (2.6 GHz)/T9500 (2.6 GHz, 6 MB L2 cache))/X9000 (2.8 Ghz), up to 8 GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667 MHz, up to 320 GB 5400 rpm hard drive/500 GB 5400 rpm or with 160 GB faster or 240 GB 7200 rpm and up to 320 GB 7200 rpm hard drive or an optional 128-GB solid-state drive, and can be configured with 128 MB DDR2 Geforce 8400GS or 256Ã, MB DDR3 8600MÃ, GT GPU. Wireless draft-n is also available (802.11n). The XPS M1530 includes a biometric fingerprint reader and a 2 MP webcam. Another option for this laptop is the glossy screen 1920ÃÆ' â € "1200, although the screen is smaller 9 inches from a 24 inch Dell monitor. XPS M1530 is no longer available for purchase on the Dell website since early August 2009. XPS M1330

This high-end 13.3-inch laptop, released on June 26, 2007, features the Santa Rosa platform. It features a 13.3-inch screen with either CCFL or WLED. The WLED-backlit version has a 0.3 MP camera, compared to a 2 MP camera with a CCFL screen. The XPS 1330 with WLED screen is thinner and brighter than previous XPS 1210 versions, the thinner WLED screen forces optics in the camera to be limited to 0.3 MP. XPS M1330 also offers NVIDIA GeForce Go 8400M GS graphics card as an option. XPS M1330 is no longer available for purchase on the US Dell website starting in early August 2009. It has been replaced by M1340 (Studio XPS 13).

Problems

The most frequently reported problem with the M1330 laptop has been overheating. Dell became aware of this problem and found that it was limited to the production of Nvidia G84- and G86-GPU chips, as a result, the BIOS was updated to A12, which improved the thermal control but did not prevent it from happening again. The problem associated with Nvidia GPU is the chip material used can not stand the high temperature. This problem is exacerbated by poor thermal contact between chip and heat pipe (the gap is too big). Some people have overcome the problem of over-heating the graphics chip by forming a heat sink using copper plates and thermal paste to fill the gap between the heat pipe and the graphics chip.

Also, there have been reported cases involving laptop M1330 which are cosmetically defective in manufacture, such as loose hinge covers and unusual and uneven gaps between plastic components, as well as customer complaints about "CPU whine".

Studio XPS 13 (M1340)

Similar to Studio XPS 16 but trimmed into a 14.2 inch aspect display screen of 720p 16:10, it has an illuminated QWERTY keyboard and includes a leather accent on the lid. His full body is a black and silver piano.

Studio XPS 16

Studio XPS 16 (M1640)

Gen 3

XPS M2010

The XPS M2010 was announced on May 31, 2006 as the top of the office bag-style desktop with a 20.1 inch wide screen with WSXGA and TrueLife resolutions. The outside of the casing has a skin-like appearance. XPS M2010 uses ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 graphics with 256 MB graphics memory and has support for dual hard drives. This laptop can be customized with Intel Core 2 Duo T2500, T5600, T7400 or T7600 and 1Ã, GB, 2Ã, GB or 4à ¢, GB DDR2 SDRAM @ 667Ã, MHz (Although the machine can take 2x2 GB @ 677Ã, MHz Ram, operates at 3.25 GB @ 500Ã, MHz due to chipset constraints as well as FSB constraints). Laptops extend to full desktop sets, including removable bluetooth keyboard, bluetooth mouse, and center distance Radio frequency media. XPS M1210

A high-performance ultra-portable (12.1-inch) notebook featuring a new case design, Intel Core Duo processor technology, an optional NVIDIA GeForce 7400 Go video card and an optional 1.3 megapixel integrated web camera. The M1210 also features an optional WWAN (wide area wireless network) that supports 3G broadband services. With standard battery, 1.9 kilogram laptop weight. This model features a selection of some of Intel's processor phones, 14.1-inch widescreen, and between 512 to 2 GB of RAM. This model is more media-oriented than the game does not currently have a dedicated graphics card. This model has been replaced by the E1405, a 14.1-inch laptop physically similar to the M140. XPS 10 is an ARM-based convertible tablet with keyboard holder, running Windows RT, similar to Microsoft Surface. The tablet was unveiled on August 30, 2012 and discontinued in September 2013.

Special Edition

Dell has introduced several "special" models based on certain models in the XPS series, but has unique characteristics. This includes special cases and high performance components (processor, video card, etc.). Some of these models are very rare because they are produced in limited quantities and are very expensive or just produce results (like the XPS X-Men Edition case, see below).

XPS 600 Renegade

The first example of a special edition in the Dell XPS series is the XPS 600 Renegade released in early 2006, including an Intel Pentium D Extreme Edition 965 processor overclocked at the factory from 3.73 GHz to 4.26 GHz.
