In the United States, a Bachelor of Physical Therapy degree is a post-baccalaureate degree that takes 3 years to complete after completing a Bachelor's degree. DPT is considered a clinical doctor who is educated in many areas of rehabilitation. A Physical Therapy Doctor Transition Degree is also offered for those who already have a Bachelor's Degree or Physical Therapy (CPM or MPT) professional. By 2015, all accredited and thriving physical therapist programs are DPT programs. The current DPT degree prepares students to be eligible for a PT license examination in all 50 states. As of March 2017, there are 222 physicians of the Accredited Physical Therapy Program in the United States. In 2000 the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) issued a statement Vision 2020 , which states (in part):

"By 2020, physical therapy will be provided by physical therapists who are physician physical therapists, recognized by consumers and other health care professionals as a preferred practitioner to whom consumers have direct access to diagnosis, intervention for, and prevention of disorders , functional limitations, and disabilities associated with movement, function, and health. History of DPT level

Reception

Admission to Physician Physical Therapy programs in the United States is very competitive. Controversy

The use of a doctor's degree by physical therapists and other non-physician health care professionals is controversial. In a letter to The New York Times, the president of the American Physical Therapy Association replied:

"To provide consumers with accurate information, the American Physical Therapy Association has taken a proactive approach and provided clear guidance to physical therapists regarding the use of the title" Doctor. Professional degree (entry-level)

United Kingdom

Glasgow Caledonian University in Glasgow is the first in the UK to offer a 3.5-year doctoral program in Physiotherapy (pre-enrollment) which is the first clinical doctor to lead to qualification as a qualified physiotherapist to register with CSP and HCPC in the United Kingdom. The program focuses on the development of researchers as well as professional development in the context of health and social care.
