1800s
Dun & amp; Bradstreet traces its history back to July 20, 1841, with the establishment of The Mercantile Agency in New York City by Lewis Tappan, later called R.G. Dun & amp; Company. Recognizing the need for a centralized credit reporting system, Tappan formed the company to create a correspondent network that would provide reliable, objective credit information to customers. As an advocate for civil rights, Tappan uses his abolitionist connection to expand and update corporate credit information. Regardless of the allegations for violating personal privacy, in 1844, the Mercantile Agency had more than 280 clients. The agency continues to expand enabling offices to open in Boston, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. In 1849, Tappan retired, allowing Benjamin Douglass to take over a booming business.
In 1859, Douglass transferred the company to Robert Graham Dun, who immediately changed the company's name to R.G. Dun & amp; Company. Over the next 40 years, Graham Dun continues to expand its business across international boundaries.
1900s
In 1933, Dun joined a competitor, John M. Bradstreet to form Dun & amp; today. Bradstreet. This merger was engineered by CEO Dun, Arthur Whiteside. Whiteside replacement, J. Wilson Newman, worked to improve the reach of Dun's products and services and expanded dramatically during the 1960s with technical ways to apply new technologies to evolving operations. The Dun & amp; The Bradstreet Universal Data Numbering System (D & D-U-N-SÃ,î Number) was invented in 1963. In 1996 the company vested vested created three D & amp; B Companies, Nielsen and Cognizant Corporation. Cognition companies include Nielsen TV Ratings, Gartner Group, Clarke-O'Neill, Erisco and some other lesser-known entities. In 1999, Cognizant Corporation separated the Nielsen TV Rating and soon after it released all of its holdings as IMS Health. IMS Health continues to hold its prize incubator company currently known as Cognizant Corporation. Moody's, credit reporting agency, acquired by Dun & amp; Bradstreet in 1962. In 1986, Dun & amp; Bradstreet acquired the Market Data Retrieval (MDR) education data company.
2000s
During 2001, Dun & amp; Bradstreet acquired the company Harris InfoSource International, Inc., a data company. In February 2003, the company acquired Hoover.
On February 5, 2003, Dun & amp; Bradstreet repeats the results of the previous period to correct the timing errors in recognition of some earnings related to 14 of the Company's 200 products, following a review of its earnings recognition from 1997 to 2002. In August 2010, Dun & Bradstreet rotates and sells their business management and monitoring credits to the newly formed company, Dun & amp; Bradstreet Credibility Corp. In August 2010, Dun & amp; Bradstreet releases his Self-Awareness Solution business for Dun & amp; Bradstreet Credibility Corp. and entered into a data license partnership. In 2007, Dun & amp; Bradstreet acquired AllBusiness.com and sold the company in 2012.
In October 2013, Bob Carrigan became CEO of Dun & amp; Bradstreet.
On January 5, 2015, Dun & amp; Bradstreet acquired NetProspex data management company. In April 2015, Dun & amp; Bradstreet earns Dun & amp; Bradstreet Credibility Corp. and announced the formation of a new division, Dun & amp; Bradstreet Emerging Business. In January 2017, Dun & amp; Bradstreet acquired Avention, the maker of OneSource solutions.
On February 12, 2018, Dun & amp; Bradstreet announces Bob Carrigan will step down as Chairman & amp; CEO, and Thomas Manning will become interim CEOs until permanent CEOs emerge.
