The Harvard Library system consists of about 73 libraries, with over 18 million volumes. It is the oldest library system in the United States and the largest university library and the largest private library system in the world. Based on the number of items held (including music scores, maps, prints, recordings, etc.), it is the fifth largest library in the United States; only by volume (generally books), this is the third largest, after the Library of Congress and the Boston Public Library.

History

The Harvard library system grew from an inheritance in 1638 by John Harvard of 400 books.

The location of the library changes over time. Originally at the Old College building. In 1676, the library was moved to Harvard Hall, where it remained until the building burned down during a fire in 1764. The 1764 fire destroyed the entire collection. Soon after, Harvard Hall was newly built and 15,000 books were collected to create a new library. Over time space was limited to Harvard Hall, and the library was moved to Gore Hall in 1841. Finally, Gore Hall no longer fits and books were moved elsewhere in 1912. Around this time, the library spread to more than one building. Some libraries are devoted to special topics.

Over the next century the library grew to become the largest in America, but on January 24, 1764, a major fire destroyed almost all of Harvard's books and scientific instruments. All the books in the library at the time of the fire were completely burned. The books that had been lent when the fire occurred were the only part of the remaining collection. Books and donations are offered by friends from colleges to replace their collections. An eccentric British Thomas Hollis V from Lincoln's Inn, London, (the great nephew of one of the University's early donors), began sending thousands of special volumes selected to the University Library. Hollis continued to send books regularly until his death in 1774 and he also left  £ 500 for funds to continue buying books. This became the first book fund sponsored by Harvard, and is still actively improving the collection every year. The online catalog of the Harvard Library, HOLLIS (bacronym for H arvard O n- L ine L ibrary My nformation S ystem "), named after it.

Several books have been digitized in the Google Books Library Project, which started as a project developed with leadership and supervision by former Director Sidney Verba.

On August 1, 2012, the new Harvard Library organization began operations, designed to improve the fragmented system of 73 libraries at Harvard School with one that promotes University collaboration. Functions that occur in all libraries - Access Services, Technical Services, and Conservation Services - are unified to allow for greater focus on the needs of the user community. The new structure was developed from the recommendation of the Task Force at the University Library and Working Group on Library Implementation.
