Home health care software sometimes referred to as home care software or home health software is under the broad category of health care information technology (HIT). HIT is "the application of information processing that involves both computer hardware and software related to the storage, retrieval, sharing, and use of health care, data, and knowledge information for communication and decision making." Home health software is specifically designed for companies that employ home health care providers, as well as government agencies that track payments to health care providers at home.

The first software is made available to public health departments, nursing centers, and community clinics. The use of home health care software is increasing with cloud computing technology, telehealth and business analysis tools. During the early stages of the 2000s, the home health care software industry evolved from a simple database into an agency capable of delivering electronic health records. The agent software can be stand-alone or part of the software package, which includes electronic visit verification to track employee hours and time spent on home visits and patient care. Electronic visit verification
Electronic visit verification (often referred to as EVV) is a method used to verify home health visits to ensure patients are not neglected and to reduce documented homeowner visits. EVV monitors the location of caregivers, and is mandated by certain countries, including Texas and Illinois. Other countries do not mandate it, but use it as part of its Medicaid fraud control, created by the passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010. It is also widely used by employers from home health care providers to verify employee locations and working hours as well as patient care documents.
Results and rating information set (OASIS)
Home health care providers participating in Medicaid are required to report specific data on patient care known as Outcome and Assessment of Set-C Information (OASIS-C). Data includes health status, functional status, and supporting system information. This data is used to establish the size of the health care option in the patient's home. Home health care software allows healthcare providers to obtain and transmit the data while on site with the patient. Data collection is mandated by the Medicare and Medicaid Service Centers, a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services. Software to collect and send free data through CMM and also can be purchased through private vendors in addition to other home health care software.

This software is used on cloud systems managed by software vendors. Off-site maintenance of the cloud system results in lower costs for home health agencies and provides access to agency data from off-site locations.
