The car engine of the Honda K series is a four-cylinder four-cylinder engine introduced in 2001. The K-series is equipped with DOHC valvetrains and uses roller rockers to reduce friction. The machine uses coil-on-plug, ignition system without distributor with coil for each spark plug. This system excuses the use of conventional distributor-based ignition timing systems that support computer-controlled systems that allow the ECU to control ignition timings based on various sensor inputs. The cylinder has a cast iron arm similar to the B-series & amp; The F-series engine, as opposed to the FRM cylinder found in the H-series and the newer F series engine is only found on the Honda S2000.

Similar to the B series, the K-Series car engine has two short blocks of the same design; the only difference between them is the height of the deck. K20 uses a short block with a 212mm deck height where the K23 and K24 blocks have a 231.5 mm height deck.

Two versions of the i-VTEC Honda system can be found on K series machines, and both versions can be equipped with variable timing controls (VTC) on the intake cam. VTEC systems on machines such as K20A3 only operate on cam intake; at low rpm there is only one full open intake valve, the other opening is just a bit to create a vortex effect in the combustion chamber for better fuel atomization. At high rpm, both intake valves are fully open to increase engine respiration. In machines like K20A2 found in Acura RSX Type-S, VTEC systems operate on input and exhaust valves, enabling both to benefit from multiple cam profiles.

It has an aluminum block with an aluminum head. The K20Z3 has the traditional performance VTEC cams on the intake and exhaust muffler. Variable timing valve technology is included in intake but not exhaust cams. Additional valve timing control in accordance with the added "i" in i-VTEC.

This K engine version uses a turbocharger Mitsubishi TD04HL-15T with dual-channel turbine housing, optimizes low end response while enabling better high end flow. The maximum boost pressure is 13.5psi. The engines include iVTEC and VTC technologies and come mated to a 5-speed automatic version of the Honda with SH-AWD (note: SH-AWD is the 2007-2009 and optional standard from 2010-2012).
