Information Officer is the role title assigned from the Government of South Africa to the person responsible for encouraging the responsible person to comply with the principles and conditions for the processing of legitimate personal information. The title of the information officer is not the same as the data protection officer set forth in the General Data Protection Rules (GDPR). Data Protection Officer (DPO) is not the same as the main privacy officer in the United States.
The term Information Officer is not a standard term in the EU and the US because it may be confusing with the role of the Main Information Officer.
The officer's information responsibilities (similar to the Data Protection Officer) include--
- encouragement of compliance, by a public or private body, with principles and conditions for processing of legitimate personal information ;
- deals with requests made to the entity by the subject of data
- work with the relevant Regulator or Supervisor.
