Microsoft OneNote is a computer program for free-form information collection and multi-user collaboration. It collects user records (handwritten or typed), images, screen clippings and audio comments. Notes can be shared with other OneNote users over the Internet or network. OneNote is available as part of Microsoft Office and Windows 10. It is also available as a free standalone app for Windows, MacOS, Windows RT, Windows Phone, iOS and Android. A web-based OneNote version is provided as part of OneDrive or Office Online; this version allows users to edit notes via a web browser.

Overview
In OneNote, users can enter typed text through the keyboard, create tables, and insert images. However, unlike word processors, users can write anywhere on an almost unlimited document window simply by clicking there. In addition, users do not have to explicitly save their work - OneNote stores data automatically when the user is working.
OneNote stores information in pages organized into sections in notebooks . The interface provides an electronic version of the ringed ring binder, where users can instantly create notes and collect material from other applications. OneNote's notebook collects, organizes, and shares material that may not be published - compared to word processors and wikis, which typically target publishing in several ways. The differences show certain features and characteristics of OneNote:
- The page can be arbitrarily large
- A bitmap image can be inserted without loss of quality
- No uniform uniform layout or page structure
Users can move pages into binders and annotate with the stylus or word processor or drawing tool. Users can add embedded multimedia footage and web links.
While OneNote generally runs on laptops or desktop PCs, additional features support pen-enabled tablet computers, in environments where pen, audio, or video recordings are more appropriate than intensive keyboard usage.
OneNote integrates search and indexing features into free form graphics and audio repositories. It can search for images (for example, screenshots, embedded document scans, photos) for embedded text content. It also looks for "electronic ink" annotations as text, and phonetically searches audio recordings on text keys. It can play back audio simultaneously with the note taken during the recording.
Its multi-user capability allows offline paragraph-level editing with sync and merge later. This facilitates collaboration among working group members who are not always online. More than one person can work on the same page at the same time - using OneNote as a shared whiteboard environment.
On March 17, 2014, Microsoft released the OneNote cloud service API that allows third-party application developers to integrate services into their applications. API runs in globally available global clouds, and sends data from apps to OneDrive users. Although the service stores data in OneNote notebooks, this service can also do things like run Optical Character Recognition on images and display web pages as snapshot images.
Microsoft also announced a number of new features in OneNote that use API services:
- OneNote Clipper : A browser booklet that uses the OneNote service API and allows users to save screenshots of webpages to OneNote with links. Text in screenshot created can be searched using Optical Character Recognition.
- Email to OneNote : A feature that lets users send email to the me@onenote.com address of a predefined email ID to store stored mail content to OneNote.

OneNote 2010 can read and write OneNote 2007 file formats. It can also convert back and forth between 2010 and 2007 formats.
Microsoft has documented the OneNote file format. This is an open file format file that allows attachment storage like images, videos, etc. Inside a single binary file.
The OneNote file format is also supported by Outline - the registrar app for iPad and Mac. Outline can open, edit and save the notebook in OneNote file format.

Before Windows Live Mesh is stopped, OneNote supports it for cloud-based storage and OneNote file syncing. The OneNote client, including the OneNote Online Office web app, can view and edit it.
OneNote is also available for mobile phones. The OneNote mobile version is included in Office Hub on Windows Phone. This version supports notebooks stored locally on the phone, or synchronized with remote copies in OneDrive or SharePoint. Notes made by OneNote for Windows Phone 7 can not be opened with OneNote 2007. OneNote Mobile is also built into Windows Mobile Professional 6.1. OneNote Mobile for older Windows Mobile smartphones and pocket PCs included with OneNote 2007. OneNote is available on Symbian as part of Microsoft Apps. Microsoft has released a stand-alone OneNote app for iOS and Android, each of which is free of up to 500 records. Outside 500 records, a paid upgrade is available. On July 1, 2013, Microsoft released version 2 of its app for the iPad, which contains significantly updated features, to get closer to what's available on the Windows platform. On August 19, 2014, Microsoft updated OneNote for Android Tablet to include handwriting support and touch-friendly navigation.
The OneNote Windows Store version (officially known as OneNote MX) is available for Windows 8 and RT, using OneDrive as a storage area. It is optimized for use on tablets by implementing a unique radial context menu and applying the operating system tablet-specific functionality.
On March 17, 2014, Microsoft released OneNote for Mac. It's compatible with Mac OS X 10.9 and above and can be downloaded for free from the Mac App Store. Microsoft also makes OneNote 2013 for Windows desktop available for free. OneNote for Windows and Mac are both based on the freemium model. Premium features such as SharePoint support, version history, and previous Outlook integration are only available to Office 365 and Office 2013 subscribers, but on February 13, 2015, Microsoft removed all feature restrictions, except for local notebooks - free editions only store notebooks in OneDrive - from the program , basically making this program absolutely free to use.
Microsoft OneNote has become an integral part of Windows 10 and its mobile phone partners, with features that bring the app better suited to iPhone/iPad and its Android partners. However, the Android app only allows three minutes of audio recording per July 2017.
