Ancient reference

Nike and his brothers were Zeus's close friends, the dominant god of the Greek god. According to the classical myth (later), Styx takes them to Zeus when the god gathers the allies for Titanomachy against the older god. Nike takes on the role of a divine coachman, a role in which he is often depicted in Classical Greek art. Nike flying around the battlefield rewards victory with glory and fame, symbolized by a series of laurel leaves (bay leaf).

Nike is seen with wings in most of the statues and paintings, with one of the most famous being the Winged Victory of Samothrace. Most other winged gods in the Greek pantheon had unleashed their wings in Classical times. Nike is the goddess of strength, speed, and victory. Nike is a very close acquaintance of Athena, and is thought to stand in Athens' hands stretched across the statue of Athena located in the Parthenon. Nike is also one of the most commonly depicted figures on Greek coins.
