Ashton Kutcher Controversy
Popchips received widespread criticism for their May 2012 video ad campaign featuring actor Ashton Kutcher. The campaign features Kutcher as an Indian man 'looking for love' in a spoof of ad-style advertising. Kutcher uses brown face makeup and Indian accent stereotypes are considered insensitive to racial and offensive and receive reactions from online viewers and members of the American-Indian community. While Kutcher has not yet acknowledged the criticism, the video was withdrawn and a spokesman for Popchips stated that the dating parody "was created to provoke some laughter and never intended to stereotype or offend anybody."
Celebrity
Ashton Kutcher is the first celebrity to support the company, with 13 million followers on Twitter. Kutcher encourages Popchips publicity. In 2012, Popchips also gets other celebrity supporters, Katy Perry. Since 2012, Perry has been featured in commercials and has also helped launch his own Popchips flavor, Kettle Corn from Katy.
In 2012, Michael Ian Black and Tom Cavanagh featured Popchips in episode 33 of Mike's iconic snack podcasts and Tom Eat Snacks. On a scale of 1-10, Tom ranks Popchip 5, while Mike gives them a score of 3.
