The United States Center for Sexuality Information and Education ( SIECUS ) is a national non-profit organization dedicated to affirming that sexuality is a natural and healthy part of life. SIECUS develops, collects, and disseminates information, promotes comprehensive education on sexuality, and advocates the right of individuals to make responsible sexual choices. It is recognized as the institutional voice of this concern and the pioneer of comprehensive sex education programs.
The organization was founded in 1964 by Mary Calderone, medical director of Planned Parenthood, to challenge the American Association of Social Health's sex education programs. In 1968, Billy James Hargis and Gordon Drake targeted SIECUS in "What School House is the Right Place to Teach Raw Sex?" pamphlets, and other similar publications.
SIECUS is based in Washington, D.C.
SIECUS fund and manage the Future of Sex Education project, the National Sexuality Education Standard and the National Teacher Preparation Standards affect policy makers and educators.
