Black Mirror is the British science fiction anthology television series created by Charlie Brooker, with Brooker and Annabel Jones serving as program events. It tests modern society, especially with regard to the unforeseen consequences of new technology. Standalone episodes, usually arranged in alternate or near-term gifts, often with a dark tone and satire, though some are more experimental and lighter.
The show aired for two series on UK Channel 4 television channels in December 2011 and February 2013, respectively. After addition to the catalog in December 2014, Netflix purchased the program in September 2015. It commissioned a series of 12 episodes then divided into the third and fourth series, each of six episodes; the first was released on 21 October 2016 and the last on December 29, 2017. The fifth series was announced on 5 March 2018.
Black Mirror is inspired by older anthology events like The Twilight Zone, capable of handling controversial contemporary topics without fear of censorship. Brooker developed the Black Mirror to highlight topics related to human dependence on technology, creating stories that show "the way we live - and how we might live in 10 minutes if we are clumsy."
The series has received positive reviews and has seen an increase in international interest, particularly in the United States after its addition to Netflix. In 2017, the well-received episode of "San Junipero", from series three, won the Black Mirror, the first Emmy PrimeTime Award, for Extraordinary Movie Television and Exceptional Writing for Serial, Film, or Special Drama Limited to Brooker.

Production
Conception and style
Charlie Brooker has completed the production of Dead Set, a zombie-based drama series, and while working on Newswipe and other programs, has decided that he wants to create another drama series, in an anthology style like < i> The Twilight Zone, Tales of the Unexpected , and Hammer House of Horror . Brooker admits that Rod Serling has written episodes of The Twilight Zone using contemporary issues, often controversial as racism, but putting it in a fictitious setting to get around the television sensors at the time. For Brooker, he realizes that he can make similar comments on modern issues, and specifically focuses on human dependence on technology, something he encounters when producing the series How Your TV Shattered Your Life . Brooker drew the series' title from this approach:
"If technology is a drug - and it feels like a drug - then what exactly, the side effects? This area - between excitement and discomfort - is the place of the Black Mirror, my new drama series is arranged" black mirror " of the titles are what you'll find on every wall, on every desk, on the palm of each hand: cool and shiny TV screens, monitors, smartphones. "
Brooker wants to keep the anthology approach, using new stories, settings, characters and actors for each episode, as he feels this approach is a key element to enjoy shows like The Twilight Zone; he said, "There is a signature tone to the stories, the same dark brown layers - but the contents are always surprising." This approach will allow Black Mirror to contrast with current dramas and series that have standard repeat players. According to Brooker, the production team considered giving a series of connecting themes or presenters, but ultimately it was decided not to do so: "There is a discussion Do we organize everything on the same path? Do we have some characters that appear in every episode, Three Colors: Blue/White/Red style? We did think about having characters introduce them, Styles of Crypt styles, or like Rod Serling or Alfred Hitchcock or Roald Dahl, since most anthology shows do have... but the more we think about it, we think it's a bit weird. "
While production does not use liaison elements, the show has included figures and Easter eggs from previous episodes to subsequent episodes. For example, "Hate in the Land" in the third series calls back to the events of both the first episode series "The National Anthem" and the second series episode of "White Bear". while the final episode of the fourth series "Black Museum" includes references to each episode of the previous episode. Some of them are for easy reuse of names developed in previous episodes; for example, they created a fictitious "UKN" broadcast network to handle news reports that encourage stories, while pizza delivery companies used in "USS Callister " are used again for companies that run automated pizza trucks at "Crocodile". Other Easter eggs are added because they know the audience will be very dissectable the episode and give this as a joke. However, over time the use of Easter eggs becomes more focused, such as to establish the "dream universe" canon that occurs in the episode. Brooker notes that when they chose to reuse the cover of Irma Thomas' "Anyone Know What Love Is", was first introduced in "Fifteen Million Benefits", to "White Christmas", because "it sort of collects all things together in a kind of natural art ".
Giles Harvey commented in the Brooker profile for The New Yorker that each episode "sets the background of normality to be used to make a decisive tweak". Harvey notes that the various genres of the show show that "the real is the work of someone who has recorded the screen time for hours". He further commented that Brooker is "conscientious", since "every episode is trusted depends on maintaining the complex internal logic of his dystopic world". Brooker was involved during the filming and editing process, showing any inconsistencies that appeared, and "determined to make the device and screen and interface used in 'Black Mirror' look authentic". As an example of Brooker's "meticulous attention to detail", Harvey reports that Brooker carefully considered whether the falling wine bottle would be destroyed in the virtual reality of "Playtest" nesting, and whether it would rain in the eponymous location of "San Junipero ". An example of realistic technology is the email system in "Be Right Back", which contrasts with the "histrionic computer" found in Hollywood; an email sent to the main character with the title "Martha, the people in the position you bought the following", contains various books on the subject of grief counseling. Knowing that the event's fans have dissected some of these details by watching the frame by frame episode, Brooker and his team have included a funny trap on this fan through messages printed on various props, such as paragraphs in news articles held by characters devoted to event buffs at Reddit in "Crocodile".
Series one and two
The first two series of the program were produced by the Brooker production company, Zeppotron, for Endemol. The Endemol press release describes this series as "a combination of The Twilight Zone and Tales of the Unexpected that leverage our contemporary anxiety about our modern world", with stories that have feelings "techno-paranoia". Channel 4 describes the first episode, "The National Anthem", as "parable played for Twitter age". Black Mirror series 1 has a limited DVD release for PAL/Region 2 on February 27, 2012.
A trailer for the second series was made by the Moving Picture Company, and featured three interspersed storylines: "Dream sequences, repetitive factory settings and large dust clouds sweeping the streets at the edges of the advertising climate." Aired from January 22, 2013, ads are shown on Channel 4 and in theaters. The second series has a DVD release, which like the first DVD series is PAL for region 2 only.
In 2013, Robert Downey Jr. chose the episode "The Entire History of You" (written by Jesse Armstrong) to potentially be filmed by Warner Bros and his own production company, Team Downey. This event is available in the US on Netflix from late 2014 onwards.
Series three
In September 2015, Netflix commissioned 12 episodes of Black Mirror . In March 2016, beat Channel 4 for the rights to distribute the third series, with a bid of US $ 40 million . Endemol released a statement saying that Channel 4 "has an opportunity to recommission [Black Mirror] since 2013 and forward it and the next co-production offer is given to them. [...] Further efforts are made to try to achieve a settlement on the UK window for Channel 4, but this is also unfortunately pointless ". In a press release, Channel 4 said that they "offered to recommission Black Mirror ". This marks the first time that an online streaming service has earned rights to an event where the original network wants to update it. The titles of the six episodes that compose the 3 series were announced in July 2016, along with the release date.
In developing the third series of stories, Brooker has looked back on the first two and special Christmas series, and admits that all the stories are about characters trapped in situations they can not avoid. Coupled with an anthology format that asks viewers to sink into the story to understand each other's traits, it creates a sense of darkness and horror, which can make it difficult to watch episodes in a row without becoming uncomfortable. With the third series, Brooker wanted to explore the various formats, still have some "trap" episodes but added more conventional stories such as romance and police procedural, making the new series easier to digest for viewers. A trailer for the third series was released in October 2016. The third series series included Bryce Dallas Howard, Alice Eve, James Norton, Cherry Jones, Wyatt Russell, Alex Lawther, Jerome Flynn, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mackenzie Davis, Michael Kelly, Malachi Kirby , Kelly Macdonald, and Faye Marsay. The directors for the third series include Joe Wright, Jakob Verbruggen, James Hawes, and Dan Trachtenberg. The third series was released on Netflix worldwide on 21 October 2016.
Series four
According to Brooker, the fourth series has more variations in episodes than the previous series. Brooker said that there are "few more hopes" in this series, credited this to the fact that writing began in July 2016 and continued throughout the US elections in 2016, and "I really think, I do not know what the world's state will be at this [episode] comes up, and I do not know how much lust there will be for nothing but nasty nihilism. "The series features episodes of episode contained by Penn Jillette. Jodie Foster directs the "Arkangel" episode, starring Rosemarie DeWitt; one episode was filmed in Iceland ("Crocodile") and another openly comedy in tone ("USS Callister "). Jesse Plemons, Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson, Michaela Coel, Andrea Riseborough, Andrew Gower, Georgina Campbell, Joe Cole, George Blagden, Maxine Peake, Douglas Hodge and Letitia Wright appeared in the fourth series. In addition to Foster, this episode was directed by Toby Haynes, John Hillcoat, Van Patten's Team, David Slade, and Colm McCarthy.
In May 2017, Reddit posts unofficially announce the name and director of the six episodes in series 4 of the Black Mirror . The filming for the fourth series ends in June 2017. The first footage for this series was released by Netflix on August 25, 2017, and contains six episode titles. In September 2017, two photos from the fourth season were released. Beginning on November 24, 2017, Netflix publishes a series of posters and trailers for each episode in the fourth series of events, referred to as "13 Days of Black Mirror", ending on December 6, 2017 with the announcement of the release date. The six episodes were released to Netflix on December 29, 2017.
Series five
In December 2017, when Brooker and executive producer Annabel Jones were asked about the possibility of creating the fifth series of Black Mirror, they said, "We'll be glad to do it." Netflix announced its fifth series via social media on March 5, 2018, although it did not announce the release date or the number of episodes. On March 20, 2018, at the London Community Television Award 2018, Brooker confirmed that the fifth series has begun filming.
Future ideas
In October 2016, Brooker said that he had an idea of ââwhere the sequel to "White Bears" and "Be Right Back" would go away, but it was unlikely that both would be made. Furthermore, Brooker also stated that there are several characters in the three-episode series of "Hated in the Nation" that could potentially reoccur. The actor has appeared in several episodes of Black Mirror, but for unrelated roles, such as Hannah John-Kamen ("Fifteen Million Benefits" and "Playtest") and Michaela Coel ("Nosedive" and "USS Callister ").
When asked in the interview, Brooker has repeatedly stated that there is no plan for a sequel episode to "San Junipero". He told the Los Angeles Times that they "want to make [Kelly and Yorkie] happy there." However, Brooker has said that the show "might refer to San Junipero again" in Easter eggs, which had been used before. Brooker also raised the idea of ââsequencing the episode in "a completely different form", such as a graphic novel or "experience".
Reception
Critical response
The first series has been hailed as creative and surprising with twists-in-the-tale reminiscent of The Twilight Zone . Michael Hogan of The Daily Telegraph described the first episode, "The National Anthem", as "a surprisingly yet tumultuous comic movie, from modern media". He went on to say that "This is a very brilliant idea, the satire is very brave, it makes me gap and squeal, a bit like that poor pig." The series is taken in most parts of the world, including Australia, Israel, Sweden, Spain, Poland, Hungary, and China. The series has become popular and well-received in China, becoming one of the most talked-about series in early 2012. User ratings on Douban reached 9.3, higher than most popular American dramas. Many viewers and critics praise the depth of this series. A reporter from The Beijing News thought the program was "doomsday of the modern world", "desperate but deep". Another article from the same newspaper thought every story criticized television from various aspects. Xu Wen at The Epoch Times thought the story expressed the moral hatred of modernity.
In the second series, Black Mirror continues to receive praise. In his review of the episode "Be Right Back", Sameer Rahim of The Telegraph wrote, "The show is touching important ideas - the wrong way we sometimes present ourselves online, and our ever-increasing addiction to the virtual life - but that's also the exploration of touching sadness.I think it's the best thing Brooker does. "Jane Simon from The Daily Mirror newspaper website says that the second episode of the second series," Bear White ", lacked an" instant emotional pull "from the opening series," Be Right Back ". He goes on to say that, a third of the way through the second episode, he has lost hope of closing it well, "the acting is unbelievable, the script is full of horror horror movies, the violence is a bit over the top", but in the end, I was totally wrong in every count. "He ended the piece with," This is the work of the dark and crooked genius of Mr. Brooker. " The second series are popular in China. Wen Bai at the Information Times thought the second series was still "fierce," and "almost perfect".
In December 2014, Stephen King recorded his admiration for the series. The special Christmas performance that year, "White Christmas" got critical acclaim. Ben Beaumont-Thomas of The Guardian praised the satire of comics from the episode and noted that "sentimentality is offset by evil intelligence, and brio Brooker and imagination paper over every crack in logic." The Daily Telegraph reviewer Mark Monahan gave the 4/5 star episode, noting that the drama was "a thrilling thing: entertainment escaped with a very stinging world in its tail". Monahan likens the episode to the more powerful episode of the previous Black Mirror, stating that "it is excessive of present-day technology and an obsession for the subtle but infernal, nightmare-before-Christmas effects of a reminder that in honor of our digital gizmos is be their pathetic slave. "
The third and fourth series received positive reviews from critics, earning ranks 82 and 74 out of 100 on Metacritic, respectively.
Journalists have reported that some concepts in Black Mirror have become reality, in the world of fashion, in the real world, and have been called the 8-Ball Magic show for the future. The first episode, "The National Anthem", tells of the British Prime Minister who was blackmailed to have sex with a pig; in September 2015, four years after the episode aired, it was alleged that David Cameron, who at that time the British Prime Minister had put "private parts" into the dead pig's mouth as part of a university initiation ceremony. Brooker calls this event "coincidental, though weird enough", and quite nervous when he first hears the accusation: "I really wonder for a moment whether the reality is a simulation, is it just there to deceive me", he said in an interview. Some news reports compare Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign with "The Waldo Moment", the 2013 episode in the second series; then, in September 2016, Brooker also compared the Trump campaign to the episode and predicted Trump would win the 2016 election. The third episode of the "Nosedive" series presents a social assessment based system some of which were found to be reflected by China's proposed Social Credit System. Brooker was surprised to see how some of these events occurred. "But that's quite a trippy, I'm getting used to it, because it seems pretty often there are things in the story that come true."
Accolades
In November 2012, Black Mirror won the Best TV/Miniseries Movie at the International Emmy Awards. Emmy International was awarded to a TV series produced and initially aired outside the US. After the two series aired in the United States, The A.V. Club place it in the Best of 2013 list (along with Borgen , The Fall , Moone Boy and Please Like Me ). Bryce Dallas Howard received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her performance in the episode "Nosedive". At the 69th Emmy PrimeTime Awards, Black Mirror received three nominations with two wins, including the fabulous Television Movie for "San Junipero".

In June 2017, Brooker announced a series of novels based on the Black Mirror that will offer "new, original, satirical satirical stories that take advantage of our collective anxieties about the modern world". Brooker will edit three volumes of novels that will feature short stories of anthologies by different authors. The first installment will include stories written by Cory Doctorow, Claire North and Sylvain Neuvel. It is scheduled to be released on September 20, 2018; the second installment at the end of the year; and the third in 2019.
