The Chevrolet Equinox is a mid-size model (model 2004--2017), then compact (2018 - present) crossover SUV from Chevrolet based on Theta General Motors unibody platform, and introduced in 2004 for Model Year 2005.

Video Chevrolet Equinox

First generation (2005-2009)

Chevrolet Equinox was introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year. Originally, Equinox was featured at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show.

Pontiac Torrent was introduced in 2005 for the 2006 model year. The Pontiac Torrent was originally featured at the 2005 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Driving on GM Theta platform, the unibody is mechanically similar to Saturn Vue and Suzuki XL7. However, Equinox and Torrent are larger than Vue, with a 112.5 inch (2.858 mm) wheelbase, 5.9 inches (150 mm) longer than Vue. Standard front-wheel drive, with optional all-wheel drive. They are not designed for serious off-road such as Chevrolet Tahoe truck-based and Chevrolet TrailBlazer.

For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox for the first time, as the GM badge was added at the front door.

The first generation Equinox and Torrent are produced exclusively at the combined factory CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made in China (by Shanghai GM), while the Aisin AF33 transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP are available with a 3.6 V6 V engine made in the United States. Production ends in May 2009.

Chevrolet Equinox was not sold in Mexico for model year 2009.

Pontiac Torrent

While Torrent shares its basic and mechanical structure with Equinox, it has different front and rear styles. Suspension ( FE2 ) and electronic power steering are both modified to make it feel firmer and sportier.

Torrent was discontinued after the 2009 model year as part of the termination of the Pontiac brand, with the latter rolling off the assembly line on September 2, 2009. A Buick Theta crossover SUV has to be made, effectively taking place in Pontiac. Torrent. Instead, GM replaces Torrent with GMC Terrain, which shares the Theta platform with second-generation Equinox.

Sport Trims

For 2008 and 2009 models, GM offers sporty versions of Equinox and Torrent; called Sports and GXP , respectively. Featuring a new DOHC V6 3.6 LY7 engine paired with a new 6-speed automatic transmission (with Manual Tap Up/Down shifting capability). This larger and more powerful engine (264 hp (197 kW) or 40% increase) allows acceleration from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in less than seven seconds.

These models also receive a 1 inch (25 mm) ride height with performance tuned suspension and unique front and rear body kits. The lower attitudes accented by the 18-inch 5-spoke chrome wheels and the absence of roof racks, giving them a smoother design flow than the standard models. GXP has double hood spoons, hydraulic-powered rudder (compared to electrically supported standards), enhanced interior trim with unique gauges, and dual chrome tipped exhaust.

Optional features include navigation, heated sport leather seats, DVD entertainment system, sunroof and all-wheel drive. GM stated that Equinox Sport is the first vehicle to reflect a more careful naming standard. Instead of using the Super Sport badge as in the past on higher performance vehicles (like this one), GM chose to reserve the SS nomenclature for a special model worth mentioning its name. GM also prominently promotes GXP in television commercials by touting its horsepower superiority over the BMW X3, in an effort to brand Pontiac more as a direct, low-cost competitor to BMW.

Equinox LTZ

Equinox LTZ model added. It is distinguished by 17-inch chrome-plated chrome wheels, bright chrome door handles and bright chrome side rail inserts. Standard interior features include heated front seats, leather side inserts, curtain head coverings, air bags, AM/FM stereo with six-disc CD changer on the dashboard and MP3 CD playback capabilities, as well as Pioneer's premium seven speaker audio system. Equinox LTZ comes with the same travel and handling packages as the LS and LT models.

feature 2008 model

Changes to the Equinox and Torrent 2008 models include relocating the compass readings from the inner rearview mirror to the driver's information center (on the equipped models), and three new exterior colors: Metallic Blue Metallic, Black Metallic Granite, and Metallic Gold Teal.

OnStar is standard on Equinox and Torrent 2008. This system is included for Turn-by-Turn Navigation, the first onsite integrated GPS navigation system installed by the factory from OnStar. The 2008 model includes improved travel and travel packages with harder shocks, bushing, and adjusted spring rate. Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and tire pressure monitoring systems are standard.

An Electronic Sway Control Trailer is introduced that is integrated into the standard StabiliTrak system. This can detect the occurrence of trailer wobble that may be caused by improper trailer weight balance or excessive vehicle speed. If the trailer starts to sway, StabiliTrak will apply the brakes individually, regardless of the driver controlling the brake pedal, to help stabilize the vehicle. Under these conditions, the light will light up to signal the driver to reduce the speed of the vehicle. If the trailer sway continues, the system will reduce engine torque to reduce vehicle speed.

Side curtain air bags are optional.

For the 2008 model year, as a tribute to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, Equinox and Torrent each received a special edition; Canadian Team Edition and Podium Edition , respectively. This package adds chrome-plated wheels, sunroof, premium sound system, and special badging. This trim is only sold in Canada. Second generation (2010-2017) >

The second-generation Equinox was announced by GM on December 21, 2008, and debuted at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Equinox 2010 went on sale in June 2009. It builds on a rigid version of the same "Theta" platform used in previous models. The second-generation equinox is built with a pair of gasoline direct injection engines that are upgraded, with better fuel economy claimed by GM. Early 2010 models had a GM badge on the front door, but were later removed. Marketing Chevrolet Equinox resumed in Mexico in late November 2009, for the 2010 model year after a year's absence. Chevrolet Equinox sales to Mexico were discontinued after the 2011 model year. However, in October 2015, Equinox was reintroduced in Mexico to replace Captiva Sport for the 2016 model year.

Second-generation equinox is standard with 2.4-liter straight-4 engines manufactured in Tonawanda, New York and Spring Hill, Tennessee, with 3.0-liter V6 engine available as an option. Both of these powertrains contain six-speed automation and an optional all-wheel-drive system, with front-wheel drive being standard.

The second-generation Equinox is the third best-selling Chevrolet vehicle in North America, after Silverado and Cruze.

Model year changes

2013

For the 2013 model year, a new 3.6L V-6 injected becomes available on the LT and LTZ models, providing 301 horsepower (225 kW) and 272 lb.-ft. torque (369 Nm). This engine boasts 14 percent more horsepower and 22 percent more torque than the previous 3.0L V-6, with the same EPA fuel economy forecast. The new FE2 suspension package is offered, paired with a 3.6L V-6 and packed with 18 inch or 19 inch chrome plated wheels on the LTZ model. 2013 model introduces Chevrolet MyLink telematics system to Equinox.

Additional new features for the 2013 model include dual-player DVD entertainment system, Power comfort package, safety package with departure warning system on line, front collision warning and back garden assistance, as well as three new exterior colors; Champagne Silver Metallic, Atlantis Metallic and Tungsten Metallic.

Blue Velvet Metallic and Sea Grass Metallic are added as a list of available exterior colors.

â € <â € <2016

For 2016, Chevrolet Equinox received its first mid-cycle refreshment along with its cousin, GMC Terrain, which was launched at the Chicago Auto Show 2015 on February 12, 2015. The updated equinox receives new grille, headlamps and front fascia as well. as a reworked tail lamp. In the interior, the Equinox gets a new gear selector, a second storage rack under the dashboard, and the removal of the door lock button from the dashboard. The new trim level, L, is introduced as a base level, as LS is made up of the second tier, followed by new LT and Premier trim (replacing LTZ for 2017). LT1, LT2 and LTZ trim levels are discontinued. Premier takes LTZ place.

More features exist in LTZ and LS trims, while LT is unchanged from 2015. However, the OnStar delete feature is removed along with five-color palatal termination, CD/AM/FM/MP3/W playback audio system, back seat entertainment system and a set 19 inch chrome wheels. Instead the Chevrolet MyLink system is standard on all trims, four new colors, and new 17 and 18 inch trim wheels.

EPA fuel economy rank

Skepticism about EPA Equinox fuel economy rankings has been raised after a number of road tests on model launches reach 20 to 30% less fuel economy than official EPA ratings. After reaching 18.8 mpg -US (12.5Ã, L/100Ã, km; 22.6 mpg -imp ) in the road test, Edmunds InsideLine states, "... our tests are not close to [EPA], although we are usually within 1 mpg of EPA combined figures." Car and Driver record another 18 mpg Numbers -US (13Ã, L/100Ã, km; 22 mpg -imp ) and record ".. fuel economy that will not live up to 22 mpg -US (11 L/100 km; 26 mpg -imp )/32 mpg -US (7.4 L/100 km, 38 mpg -imp ) EPA ratings in real-world use... ". The Green Car report recorded 25.8 mpg -US (9.1Ã, L/100Ã, km; 31.0 mpg -imp ) on the way, driving almost exclusively mile highways in fashion "Eco"; this is about 20% below the published EPA highway ratings. AutoWeek only averages 23 mpg -US (10Ã, L/100Ã, km; 28 mpg -imp ). The Truth About Cars published an editorial showing that GM "boosted" the Equinox fuel economy rankings for public relations purposes and that inaccurate travel computers reported fuel economy reported to drivers.

Motorweek, however, managed to achieve 29.3 mpg -us (8.0Ã, L/100 km; 35.2 mpg -imp ) with their test car during mixed driving. LeftlaneNews.com can also average 28 mpg -US (8.4Ã, L/100Ã, km; 34 mpg -imp ) on average in mixed cities and road driving highway.

Fuel Cell

Fuel cell vehicles Chevrolet Equinox uses hydrogen to fuel it with water as the only exhaust. Equinox Fuel Cells use the fourth generation hydrogen technology found in the Chevrolet Sequel concept, which was unveiled in September 2009. The fuel cell is designed for only 50,000 miles (80,000 km) of driving, but is engineered to be operable in sub-freezing temperatures throughout its lifetime. GM states that the Equinox Fuel Cell is about 500 pounds (230 kg) heavier than the original Equinox and has an inch less than the ground. To reduce weight, it has aluminum doors and carbon fiber hood. It uses headlights from Pontiac Torrent.

A screen mounted on the dashboard calculates fuel savings with a gasoline-powered Equinox. It also includes kilowatt meters and fuel cell energy display. Fuel cells have four steam outlets that replace the exhaust pipe. The three carbon fiber fuel tanks store up to a maximum of 9.25 pounds (4.2 kg) of hydrogen gas at 10,000 psi (70 MPa), and give the Equinox a range of 200 miles (320 km). Equinox Fuel Cells is certified by the EPA as a zero-emission vehicle (ZEV). GM built 115 Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell vehicles and distributed it in 2007-2008 in several target areas including New York and California as part of a comprehensive plan dubbed "Project Driveway".

Equinox Fuel Cells include safety features such as ABS, traction control systems, and OnStar GM telegraphic services, which offer driver advice to operate the car as well as information at nearby hydrogen filling stations. This car meets all 2007 federal safety standards.

Performance

Motor Trend rated vehicle performance almost equal to 3.6 liters of equivalent-powered gasoline, while lamenting the scarcity of high pressure hydrogen charging stations near Riverside, California in 2008.

Natural gas version

In 2013, Nat G CNG Solutions and AGA Systems announced that they have started offering Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) versions of Chevy Equinox and Terrain GMC using Direct Injection 2.4 L engines. The natural gas version is a BBG "bi-fuel" vehicle, which means this gas works with gasoline or natural gas, giving it an extended range. The Terrain/Equinox is the first direct natural gas injection vehicle approved by US EPA.

Silver Eagle Distributors, distributor of Anheuser-Busch products, is a launch customer for natural gas versions with an initial order of up to 100 from GMC Terrains natural gas. CenterPoint Energy is an early customer of Chevy Equinox.

Configure CNG

The CNG version is available for the newly purchased Equinox through a particular dealer or as a retrofit on the 2013 and 2014 models. Nat G CNG Solutions offers vehicles in two options: a two seat version "cargo version" and a five-seat "passenger version". The cargo version has a combined 837-mile gasoline/natural gas (9.2 gge CNG) while the passenger version has a combined 775 mile (6.8 bushels CNG) combined highway.

Emissions and performance

The companies claim that the natural gas version has been tested at the EPA laboratory on the 31 mpg highway on natural gas and has achieved a Bin 3 emission equivalent to the Toyota Prius.
