In flight, flight information area ( FIR ) is the airspace specified where the flight information service and warning service (ALRS) is provided. This is the largest regular air division used in the world today. FIR has been around since 1947 at least.
Every part of the atmosphere belongs to a particular FIR. The smaller airspace of countries is covered by a single FIR; the airspace of the larger countries is divided into a number of regional FIRs.
Some FIRs include territorial airspace from several countries. The ocean airspace is divided into the Oceanic Information Area and delegated to the controlling authority limiting the area. The division between authority is made through international agreements through the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
There is no standard size for FIR - it is a matter of convenience for the administration of the country concerned. In some cases there is a vertical FIR division, in which case the bottom is still named, while the airspace above is named Upper Information Region (UIR).
