Infobox is a template used to collect and present a subset of information about the subject, such as a document. It is a structured document that contains a set of attribute-value pairs, and on Wikipedia represents a summary of information about the subject of the article. In this way, they are comparable to data tables in some aspects. When presented in larger documents that are summarized, an infobox is often presented in a sidebar format.

Infobox can be implemented in other documents by transmitting it into the document and specifying some or all value-attribute pairs associated with the infobox, known as parameterization.

Infobox can be used to improve the appearance of articles on Wikipedia; they are used in similar articles to ensure consistency of presentation by using a common format. Initially, infoboxes (and templates in general) are used for the purposes of page layout. Infobox can be transcluded into articles by specifying values ​​for some or all of its parameters. The parameter name used should be the same as that specified in the infobox template, but any value may be related to it. This name is separated from a value with an equal sign. The parameter name can be considered as an attribute of the subject of the article.

On Wikipedia, an infobox is transcribed into an article by attaching name and value-attribute pairs in a set of double brackets. The MediaWiki software where Wikipedia operates then parses the document, where infoboxes and other templates are processed by the template processor. This is a template engine that generates web documents and style sheets that are used for document presentation. This allows the infobox design to be separated from the manipulated content; that is, template design can be updated without affecting the information in it, and the new design will automatically spread to all articles that transcribe infobox. Typically, an infobox is formatted to appear in the top right corner of the Wikipedia article on the desktop view, or at the top in a mobile view.

Placement of infoboxes in wiki text is an important article for accessibility. The best practice is to place it by following the disambiguation template (which directs the reader to articles about topics with similar names) and maintenance templates (like marking articles as not referenced), but before all other content.

Baeza-Yates and King say that some editors find templates like infoboxes complex, because templates may hide text about properties or resources the editor wants to change; this is compounded by chained templates, ie templates transcluded in other templates.

As of August 2009, the English Wikipedia uses about 3,000 infobox templates that collectively use more than 20,000 attributes. Since then, many have been combined, to reduce redundancy. As of June 2013, there are at least 1,345,446 transclusion from the parent template Infobox, used by some, but not all, infoboxes, in 4,251,127 articles.

Infobox names are usually "Infobox [genre]", but more widely used infoboxes often have shorter names given to them, such as taxoboxes for taxonomy, war boxes for military conflicts, and geoboxes for geography.

Machine learning

About 44.2% of Wikipedia articles contain infoboxes in 2008, and about 33% in 2010. Automatic semantic knowledge control using machine learning algorithms is used to "extract machine-processable information at relatively low complexity costs". However, low coverage makes it more difficult, although this can be partially solved by supplementing the article data with that in the category in which the article is inserted. French Wikipedia started the Infobox Version 2 project in May 2011.

Knowledge gained by machine learning can be used to improve articles, such as by using automated software suggestions for editors to add infobox data. The iPopulator project creates a system for adding values ​​to the article infobox parameters through automatic parsing of the article's text.

DBpedia uses structured content extracted from infobox by machine learning algorithms to create data resources that are connected in Semantic Web; it has been described by Tim Berners-Lee as "one of the more famous" components of the related data project.

Machine extraction creates a triple consisting of a subject, a predicate or a relation, and an object. Each value-attribute pair of infoboxes is used to create an RDF statement using ontology. This is facilitated by a narrow gap between Wikipedia and ontology rather than existing between unstructured and free text and ontology.

The semantic relationship between the subject and the object is determined by the predicate. In the infobox example, triple ("crostata", type, "tart") indicates that crostata is a tart type. The article topic is used as the subject, the parameter name is used as the predicate, and the parameter value as the object. Each type of infobox is mapped to an ontology class, and every property (parameter) in an infobox is mapped to an ontology property. This mapping is used when parsing Wikipedia articles to extract data.

Many Wikipedia infoboxes also include microformat markup, making the text appear on pages that can be read by the software.
