Histori

The organization was founded on May 10, 1897 in London as Our Silent Friend League, to care for horses working on the streets of the British capital. It opened its first veterinary hospital, in Victoria, London, on May 15, 1906.

In 1912, the league launched The Blue Cross Fund to care for horses during the Balkan Wars. At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, it quickly reopened. With a truce in 1918, the Blue Cross Fund has collected nearly Ã, Â £ 170,000 - equivalent to nearly Ã, Â £ 6.5 million today - to care for the animals of conflict. More than 50,000 horses were admitted to the Blue Cross hospital in France, and the charity sent vital supplies of animals to 3,500 units of the British Army.

Donations to the Fund enabled the charity to care for more than 350,000 animals during the Second World War, many of whom were injured during the Blitz. The name of the appeals fund became more widely known than the official charity title and the league officially changed its name to "The Blue Cross" in 1950. In 2011 the charity dropped "The" from its name and is now known simply as "Blue Crossing."

Sally de la Bedoyere became the charity's CEO in November 2014.

Proposed closure of two animal centers and the opening of two new animal centers

On January 26, 2010, Blue Cross announced the proposed closure of two animal adoption centers (Felixstowe and Northiam, East Sussex), both of which have existed for over 50 years. The final decision on both sites was announced on May 4, 2010. After a vast publicity campaign by the locals, it was announced that plans to close down Felixstowe's center had been canceled. The Felixstowe Center is relocated to a specially constructed new site near Ipswich, Suffolk, in 2016 and now can treat twice as many pets as the previous site was able to care for. Blue Cross also opens a new animal adoption center in Newport, South Wales, by 2016.
