Cause

Common causes of heat exhaustion include:

  • Exertion, especially in hot and humid weather
  • Because of thermoregulation disorders, parents and infants can suffer serious heat illness even at rest, if the weather is hot and humid outside, and they do not get enough cold air.
  • Some drugs, such as diuretics, antihistamines, beta-blockers, alcohols, ecstasy, and amphetamines can cause an increased risk of heat exhaustion.

Particularly during physical activity, risk factors for heat exhaustion include:

  • Wear dark, soft, or insulated clothing; hat; and/or helmets (for example, soccer pads or sports wheels)
  • Has a higher body fat percentage
  • Dehydration
  • Fever
  • Some medications, such as beta blockers and antipsychotic drugs

  • Moving people to cool places
  • After the patient removed the extra layer of clothing
  • Cool the patient by fanning them and put a wet towel on their body
  • Make them lie down and lift their feet if they feel dizzy
  • Have them drink water or sports drinks - but only if they are awake, not confused or vomited
  • Reverse the person next to them if they vomit
