Expansion

More than three years after the opening, GCU Arena closed on March 3, 2014 to undergo major changes. With a faster jump than anticipated for the athletic Division I for the Grand Canyon Antelopes athletic program, the school announced an expansion of the arena from 5,000 to 7,000 seats. The growth of the arena is mainly meant to include enough seating for men's basketball games and for larger concerts.

Arizona sports icon Jerry Colangelo, who is closely connected to the athletic program, is involved in the expansion process, stating: "If GCU knew when the building was up just a few years ago that they would be in Division I as soon as we had, it would have been built bigger.

After the proposed completion date of 17 October, Arena opened nearly six weeks ahead of schedule on August 23rd for the Switchfoot concert as part of the 2014 Welcome Weekend school. Recent changes include the upper deck seating area, moving tracks for high definition video viewing, and a new basketball floor.
