Careers
Kumar started his fashion business in Kolkata, using two small tables and hand block printing techniques. Beginning with bridal attire and evening wear in the 1960s and 70s, he eventually moved to the international market in the next two decades. Like many Indian stores, Kumar's company has also opened branches in Paris, London and New York. The London branch was closed after three years, in 1999. His company's annual turnover at the time was the highest of any Indian fashion outlet, estimated at approximately INR10 billion. In 2002 he launched the "Label" line in partnership with his son, Amrish. In 2013 he was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India. Kumar discussed his career at length in a recent interview for the Creating Emerging Markets project at Harvard Business School, starting with how he first broke into the fashion houses and department stores of Paris and New York in the 1970s.
Design
Kumar designs focus on natural fabrics and traditional printing and weaving techniques. He also incorporated Western elements in his work, but generally did not innovate beyond traditional cider designs. Her clothes have been worn by celebrities like Princess Diana, Priyanka Chopra, Lara Dutta, Deepika Padukone, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Madhur Jaffrey, Kalki Koechlin, She Mirza, Soha Ali Khan, and Jemima Goldsmith.
