World AIDS Day , set for 1 December each year since 1988, is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning for those who have died of the disease. Government and health officials, non-governmental organizations and individuals around the world observed the day, often with education on AIDS prevention and control.

World AIDS Day is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), together with World Health Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Immunization Week, World Tuberculosis Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Malaria Day and World Hepatitis Day.

By 2017 AIDS has killed between 28.9 million and 41.5 million people worldwide, and an estimated 36.7 million people are living with HIV, making it one of the most important global public health issues in recorded history. Thanks to recent increases in access to antiretroviral therapy in many regions of the world, death rates from the AIDS epidemic have declined since peak in 2005 (1 million in 2016, compared to 1.9 million in 2005).

Histori

World AIDS Day was first conceived in August 1987 by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, two public information officers for the Global Program on AIDS at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Bunn and Netter brought their ideas to Dr. Jonathan Mann, Director of the Global Program on AIDS (now known as UNAIDS). Dr. Mann liked the concept, agreed and agreed with the recommendation that the first anniversary of World AIDS Day should take place on 1 December 1988. Bunn, a former television journalist from San Francisco, has recommended December 1 that believes it will maximize coverage of World AIDS Day by the news media west, long enough after the US election, but before the Christmas holidays.

In the first two years, the theme of World AIDS Day focuses on children and adolescents. While the choice of this theme was criticized at that time by some people for ignoring the fact that people of all ages can be infected with HIV, the theme helps reduce some stigma around the disease and increases the recognition of the problem as a family illness.

The UN Joint Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) began operations in 1996, and took over the planning and promotion of World AIDS Day. Instead of focusing on one day, UNAIDS created the World AIDS Campaign in 1997 to focus on communication, prevention and education throughout the year. In 2004, the World AIDS Campaign became an independent organization.

Every year, Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI have released congratulatory messages for patients and doctors on World AIDS Day.

In 2016, a collection of HIV and AIDS-related NGOs (including Panagea Global AIDS and AIDS and Rights Alliance for South Africa) began a campaign to change the name of World AIDS Day to World HIV Day. They claim change will place emphasis on social justice issues, and treatment advances such as PrEP.

In the US, the White House began marking World AIDS Day with an iconic display of 8 feet (8.5 m) AIDS Band at the North Portico building in 2007. The White House assists Steven M. Levine, then serves in President George W. The Bush administration, proposed a display to symbolize the United States' commitment to fight the global AIDS epidemic through its historic PEPFAR program. The White House, now an annual tradition in four presidential administrations, quickly gained attention, as it was the first banner, sign or symbol for the first time to hang from the White House since Abraham Lincoln's reign.

Since 1993, the President of the United States has made an official declaration for World AIDS Day (see section #US of the Presidential Proclamation for World AIDS Day for copies of the proclamation). On November 30, 2017, President Donald Trump proclaimed the World AIDS Day for December 1st.

Themes

All World AIDS Day campaigns focus on specific themes, selected after consultation with UNAIDS, WHO and a large number of grassroots, national and international agencies involved in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. In 2008, the theme was annually elected by the World Steering Committee of the World AIDS Campaign (WAC).

For every World AIDS Day from 2005 to 2010, the theme is "Stop AIDS, Keep the Promise", designed to encourage political leaders to maintain their commitment to achieve universal access to HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support in 2010.

In 2012, a multi-year theme for World AIDS Day is "Getting to Zero: Zero new HIV infection. Zero death from AIDS-related illness. Zero discrimination." The US Federal theme for 2014 is " Focus, Partners, Realizing: Generation of AIDS-Free" .

This theme is not limited to a single day but is used throughout the year in international efforts to highlight awareness of HIV/AIDS in the context of other major global events including the G8 Summit, as well as local campaigns such as the UK Stop Student Campaign.
